Aston Villa possible starting lineup:

Basel remain uncertain over the involvement of Kaio Eduardo, as the 20-year-old forward has only recently completed a cross-competition suspension and is still managing an unspecified injury.

Captain Xherdan Shaqiri — formerly of Stoke City and Liverpool — continues to be Basel’s standout performer, registering a team-high 11 goals and 10 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season. The 34-year-old opened the scoring in last weekend’s win at Winterthur and is expected to operate in an advanced role again on Thursday.

Benie Traoré, Philip Otele and Moritz Broschinski will all push for starting berths in attack alongside Shaqiri, while Andrej Bacanin is favoured to replace Marin Soticek and slot into midfield with Metinho and Leo Leroy.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain without Tyrone Mings and Ross Barkley due to thigh and knee injuries respectively, and Evann Guessand is doubtful after the knock that kept him out of the victory over Arsenal.

Matty Cash, who netted the opener against the Gunners, may be handed a rest, with Lamare Bogarde, Victor Lindelöf and Andrés García all viable options at right-back. García, now fully recovered, is available for his first appearance of the season.

Should Lindelöf not be required at right-back, he could instead partner Pau Torres in central defence, while Lucas Digne and Ian Maatsen contest the left-back slot.

Further forward, Donyell Malen is pushing to deputise for Ollie Watkins in attack, with Emiliano Buendía and Jadon Sancho also hoping to force their way into Unai Emery’s starting XI.
